JOHN MULKERIN
As the leader of the innovative crossover group Liquid Hips, and as a long time member of Joseph Bowie's legendary funk band Defunkt, John Mulkerin has become known as a powerhouse trumpet player with soul, fire, and imagination. His songwriting, which is flavored with funk, punk, jazz, and scathing political raps, has been called "...rude, literate, and Constitutionally enraged." *
A native of Norwalk, Ct., John moved to NYC in 1980 and by 1981 was touring Europe, the U.S., and Japan with Defunkt . He also began to make contributions to the group as a songwriter. The band headlined clubs, major rock and jazz festivals, and also shared the bill with such notable artists as The Talking Heads, Prince, The Clash, The Neville Brothers, Steel Pulse, Jimmy Cliff, Living Color, and others. In 1992, John left Defunkt and Liquid Hips began touring, going on to release three critically acclaimed albums and opening shows for Ice-T, Parliament/Funkadelic, and Public Enemy. Liquid Hips disbanded in 1999.
John Mulkerin has also performed and recorded with such notables as R&B great Pee-Wee Ellis, Punk-funk legend James Chance, downtown soul/jazz band Konk, and Murphy's Law.
